Bangor International Airport Receives U.S. DOT Grant
May 24, 2012 – Bangor, Maine – The U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded Bangor International Airport $4.9 million for the renovation of their general aviation ramp area.
Tony Caruso interim airport director commented, "Sargent Corporation was awarded the contract a few weeks ago in anticipation of the grant award. They should have the work done by September or October if the weather cooperates."
The $4,913,126 grant will be used to renovate the general aviation ramp and will allow larger aircraft to use that part of Bangor International Airport.
"Currently, we can't have anything over 100,000 pounds in that area, but after work is completed, we can go up to 150,000 pounds," said Caruso. "Now aircraft such as Challengers and Gulfstreams can use that area. After the work is finished, we'll be able to accommodate Boeing 737's and corporate versions of that size airplane on that part of the ramp."
Construction shouldn't adversely affect BGR's daily operations. "There will always be some impact when you're doing construction to an airport, but we will be doing this in phases so there won't be a major impact," Caruso explained. "It won't affect our commercial operations at all."
The work will allow BGR much greater flexibility and accommodation capabilities. This area of the airport has been somewhat underutilized because of the weight restrictions. After the construction has been completed BGR will also be able to have better aircraft parking arrangements for its general aviation traffic.
Bangor International Airport is a full-service regional airport offering non-stop, affordable flights to Detroit, New York's LaGuradia, Orlando/Sanford, Philadelphia, Tampa/St. Petersburg and Washington, D.C. BGR is also the leading airport for trans-Atlantic tech stops. The Airport is an enterprise funded entity operated by the City of Bangor and is supported solely through Airport generated revenue.
