Bangor International Airport Welcomes 2007 Air Race Classic June 20, 2007

June 20, 2007 - Bangor, Maine - Bangor International Airport is the second to last stop for the 31st annual Air Race Classic. The Air Race Classic is an all female pilot race, historically the longest in the world. This year’s Air Race Classic, which starts in Oklahoma City, OK on June 19th is 2,500 statute miles and finishes in St. John, New Brunswick, Canada. BGR anticipates the race participants will stop in Bangor on either June 20th or 21st.

Air Race Teams consist of two female pilots flying a course for four days under VFR (visual flight rules) weather restrictions during daylight hours. Navigational skills and experience will determine the leaders during the four days and define the winners at the finish line in New Brunswick. There are 49 teams competing in this year’s event, all flying small general aviation type aircraft. Bangor is one of the cities where the planes will land for refueling and where their two-woman crews can get refreshments and possibly spend the night.

“Bangor International Airport is proud to be part of this transcontinental speed competition for woman pilots. We are very excited to be selected as one of the mandatory stops along this year’s race.”  Says Airport Director Rebecca Hupp.

Bangor International Airport is a full-service regional airport offering non-stop, affordable flights to Atlanta, Boston, Cincinnati, Detroit, New York’s LaGuardia, Newark, Philadelphia, and seasonal flights to Minneapolis.  The Airport is an enterprise funded entity operated by the City of Bangor and is supported solely through Airport generated revenue.
